Amnesty International receives kudos, knocks from FG over report

Amnesty International earned some praises from the Nigerian government today on its latest report, but many knocks for the conclusions it drew.

In a statement, the government applauded Amnesty International for at least confirming the point of view that the conflict between herders and farmers in Nigeria is not about religion, but scarcity of resources and that the crisis may have been engineered by local politicians.

Amnesty triggered government reaction following the release of its report titled: “Harvest of Death: three years of bloody clashes between farmers and herders in Nigeria”.

Government picked holes in the organisation’s evidence-gathering and its leaving the facts to draw the wrong conclusions.

Government especially disagreed with Amnesty that the problem between farmers and herders is a new phenomenon, dating to just three years.

“It has been happening for over 100 years. Colonial Powers Britain and France had regularly recorded these conflicts which are available in Archives”, government rebutted in a statement by Malam Garba Shehu on Thursday.
