Why Maryam Sanda may not die by hanging despite court verdict

Despite the fact that a High court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, had sentenced Maryam Sanda to death by hanging for killing her husband, Billyaminu Bello, not many people are aware of the fact that despite this court verdict, Maryam Sanda may still not die by hanging as being sentenced by the court.

Although, the Chief Judge of the Maitama High Court sitting at the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Justice Yusuf Halilu, said Maryam Sanda was guilty of killing her husband, an act he said is not only unfortunate but wicked, but looking at it strategically, one will be convinced that Maryam Sanda may escape death by hanging.

To start with, since 1999, there have only been few cases like this that a judge will sentence someone to death by hanging.

One could remember the case of the killer of ex-Ondo deputy gov’s daughter, Adeyemi Seidu.

Seidu was sentenced to death for killing his girlfriend Khadijat Oluboyo.

Nearly a year after killing his girlfriend, the court eventually sentenced Seidu to death by hanging in May, 2019 but up till this moment, Seidu is yet to be executed, which means like Seidu, Maryam Sanda will also not be killed anytime soon, if at all she would.

The reason why the death penalty may not come into fruition is because death sentence is one, which is very delicate in Nigeria.

Apart from the fact that the culprit will have the chance of pursuing the case till Supreme Court level, the state governor of the criminal incident will also sign the warrant.

In most cases, the Appeal and Supreme Courts usually reverse the judgement or sentence the culprit to a long term jail.

And if the Appeal and Supreme Courts eventually sentence Maryam Sanda to death, it may still not work because most governors who are usually the signatory to the warrant don't always sign it.

In most cases, most people sentenced to death by hanging are always left in the prison for long until the government decides to pardon them.
