Gov. Abiodun orders closure of schools, suspends motorcycles operation

Gov. Dapo Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, ordered the immediate closure of public and private schools in the state till Monday, 26th October, 2020.

The governor gave the directive during his state of the state address at his Oke Mosan office, Abeokuta.

Abiodun also directed that operation of motorcycles, popularly called 'Okada' across the state be suspended on Wednesday, 21st October, 2020, in the first instance.

According to the governor, the actions became necessary in view of the EndSARS Protest which has escalated into another dimension, thereby leading to violence, descent into anarchy, burning of police stations, vandalization of public properties, disruption of vehicular movements on major highways leading to traffic gridlocks, deployment of okada to transport hoodlums, and extortion of members of the public at illegal barricades erected at public spaces.

Governor Abiodun further disclosed that various measures have been put in place to increase security around the correctional centres and public buildings, while blockade of highways and molestation of innocent citizens going about their lawful business by protesters will no longer be tolerated.

He said there will be deployment of joint patrol teams of security agencies to ensure no threat to public security, while requesting the youth groups to appoint leaders amongst themselves for a meeting with the governor for further dialogue.

Abiodun assured that government will be reviewing developments on a 24-hourly basis and will not hesitate to announce stringent measures as may be considered necessary.
