I'm happy to sponsor the bill increasing teachers' retirement age to 65 years - Hon Adekoya

Hon. Adesegun Adekoya, MHR

Hon. Adesegun Abdel-Majid Adekoya, Deputy Minority Whip and Member representing Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has expressed happiness that he sponsored the bill approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 65 years on the floor of the House in 2018.

Great Achiever Magazine reports that the bill received presidential assent on Monday, when President Muhammadu Buhari approved increase in retirement age of teachers to 65 years, to mark the 2020 World Teachers Day.

Reacting to President Buhari's approval, Hon. Adekoya said; "I expect that by this act and Act, our teachers will be better fired up for more productivity, efficiency and performance for the overall good of our nation in terms of Higher Education Potential index and many more.

" To whom much is given, much is equally expected".

Speaking to Great Achiever Magazine on what motivated him to sponsor the bill, Hon. Adekoya (a.k.a Attacker), said; "if University lecturers could now leave the system at the age of 70, teachers at the lower level of the sector too should still be allowed to contribute their quota to the system, because, the older they get, the wiser and the more knowledgeable they become".

He said it is therefore a huge honour for him to have seen through, the Bill, which is now an Act since the 8th Assembly, and this he attributed to his belief and uncommon passion.

The Deputy Minority Whip, on the occasion of the 2020 World Teachers Day, reassured teachers in his Federal Constituency and beyond, that he will continue to generate and sponsor bills and motions targeted at making lives more meaningful for them while they are in and out of service.
