Bandits will not be proscribed like IPOB - Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said bandits can't be proscribed in Nigeria since they don' t have any identity or name they relate to as a group.


Mohammed talked on AIT' s Kaakaki program on Wednesday, clarifying that prohibiting bandits in the nation isn't the main thing yet but how they are treated.


Comparing bandits with armed robbers, the minister said bandits and other people who challenge the security of a country can't be legally proscribed since they don't have an identity.


He said, "You restrict known groups with names. You can't simply restrict an unknown group legally. Secondly, it's not if they are proscribed, it is how they are treated. Does the public authority really approach them like a child? The appropriate response is no."


Talking on the ban of the Indigenous People of Biafra by the Nigerian government, Mohammed additionally brought up that there is a difference between the bandits and the group, taking note that, "When a group is championing a course for the disintegration of Nigeria… A group like IPOB (that) doesn't recognize Nigeria as a state, sets up its own army and thinks it is a sovereign state, is not the same as bandits and criminals. Kindly, don't analyze apples and oranges".


Yet, when inquired as to whether the bandits don't likewise threaten the sovereignty of Nigeria by waging war against its citizens, Mohammed portrayed the cases as totally not quite the same as one another.


He said, "Security challenges are  certain things. Testing the sovereignty of Nigeria is a totally unique thing. Try not to allow us to harp on semantics. "


Talking further, he said, "Don't armed robbers threaten the security of lives and property? They do. Is there anyplace on the planet that armed robbers have been proscribed? "


Numerous Nigerians had been inquiring as to whether it was legitimate to have proscribed IPOB, saying they were not known to be executioners like group of bandits threatening citizens the nation over.
