The Ogun State command of the Nigeria Police Force has warned commercial motorcycle riders, popularly called Okada riders, in the state against mob attack.
Great Achiever Magazine reports that according to a release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the command has noticed with dismay, the unruly and disorderly conduct of commercial motorcycle riders in recent times.
Oyeyemi said the riders have formed the habit of violently attacking any motorist involved in an accident with any of their members, regardless of whether such motorist is at fault or not, adding that in most cases, they will not only set such vehicle ablaze, they will also inflict serious injuries on the driver, the motor-boy, and other motorists, and in some cases, cause death of drivers.
He said, "the most recent one is the mayhem caused by the Okada riders along Asero/Obantoko on Tuesday, 25th May, 2021, simply because one of them had an accident with a truck.
"In view of this, the Command is hereby sending a note of warning to all Okada riders in the State, that such unruly behavior will no longer be tolerated. The Command’s peaceful approach in resolving issues should not be taken as license to misbehave by anybody or group of people.
"Henceforth, the leadership of any association or union whose members are involved in any act of vandalism will be held responsible.
The implication of this is that leaders of associations should be able to know their members and have control over them.
"The recent incident is going to be the last time such barbaric attitude will be allowed in any part of the State as anyone found to be involved in such act will be dealt with in most decisive manner", Oyeyemi concluded.
