World Water Day: Ogun counsels stakeholders on sustainable management of water resources

Ogun State government has counselled residents and stakeholders in the water sector especially water service providers to ensure appropriate and sustainable management of water resources in the state, reports Great Achiever Magazine.

The state deputy Governor, Engr Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, stated this when she declared open activities marking this year's world water day themed "Groundwater: Making the invisible visible", put together by the Ministry of Environment in Abeokuta.

She said it is by ensuring appropriate and sustainable management of water resources, that a lot of unregulated and uncontrolled use of water, over exploitation of the aquifer from drilling activities and indiscriminate discharge of foreign materials and wastes into water bodies which results into pollution will stop statewide.

While stressing the importance of water in human survival, the deputy Governor added that managing of water resources is about valuing, appreciating and nurturing this resources that the residents will be doing themselves and generation yet unborn a great favour, which will be in tandem with Sustainable Development Goal 6 of the 2030 agenda, which is to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Also delivering a keynote address at the celebration, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the overall benefit of water to human existence are so numerous, "no wonder the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration is committed to the resuscitation and repositioning of the Ogun State Water Corporation for optimal service delivery to the citizenry".

While thanking Nestle Nigeria Plc for partnering with the Ministry of Environment in marking the 2022 Water Day Celebration, Oresanya called on residents of the state not to waste water where there is limited supply of clean water as this may lead to drought, scarcity of agricultural produce and outbreak of diseases thereby putting further strain on government budget and expenditures.
