Ogun Internal Revenue Service compels motorists to take govt vehicle insurance before vehicle license renewal

Gov Dapo Abiodun

Ogun State Internal Revenue Service has introduced a new policy, compelling motorists to take government vehicle insurance before they could renew their vehicle license.

Great Achiever Magazine reports that a motorist that wants to renew his vehicle license, which used to cost N1900.00 for a car, is now compelled to pay N11,600.00 for both vehicle license and vehicle insurance.

A staff of Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, who spoke to Great Achiever Magazine on condition of anonymity, said the new policy took effect on Monday, 8th August, 2022, adding that several motorists who have been coming for renewal of their vehicle license since Monday had to turn back because of their inability to pay the new amount, which was described as exorbitant.

It will be recalled that prior to the take off of the new policy, motorists were at liberty to do their vehicle insurance at the insurance company of their choice, as against being compelled to do it at government owned insurance company, with no condition attached to renewal of vehicle license.

Some motorists who spoke to Great Achiever Magazine on the new development, condemned government for coming up with such a policy at this time that people are groaning under excruciating economic situation in the country.

They appealed to the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to take a second look at the policy with a view to reduce further hardship on motorists.
