The Association for the Physically Challenged, Ago Iwoye (TAPCA), on Thursday, 22nd December, 2022, held its annual Christmas party and empowerment programme for its members.
Great Achiever Magazine reports that the colorful event was held at their meeting place in Onabamiro Compound, Ago Iwoye.
Welcoming guests and members to the occasion, the Chairman of the Association, Prince ‘Yomi Abdul, thanked members for their steadfastness and upholding the tenets of the association.
Prince Abdul specifically thanked the Life Matron of the Association, Yeye Olabisi Rufai-Kuku for identifying with the association through thick and thin at all times, while appreciating the contributions of all donors and visitors to the success of the event.
The Coordinator of the Association, Mr. Ayo Awobona, while speaking on the journey so far, explained that the association was borne out of the fact that "disabilities' matters in our clime had been hugely disadvantaged with high level of stigmatization and lack of access in our society which continues to limit their visibility and inhibiting their potentials".
Awobona said TAPCA came to being with the intention of calling society's attention to the plight of the Association and fending for their members with their self help tactics, using resources they can gather from the well to do indigenes of Ago Iwoye.
He noted that mobilizing funds for the event wasn’t easy, but for God through personalities from the Ago Iwoye Great Thinkers Foundation who contributed massively to the success that was witnessed.
The Coordinator further explained that beneficiaries of the empowerment programme were selected, using their punctuality to meetings, their dedication to the association activities and those with the most pressing needs of economic empowerment as criteria.
In his address at the occasion, Olootu Sola Olufeisan, who is one of the Administrators of the Ago Iwoye Great Thinkers Foundation Platform, enjoined all members of the association not to give up on themselves or look down on themselves but rather keep keep going because the future is surely bright for them.
He thanked members of the Ago Iwoye Great Thinkers Foundation who contributed hugely to the success of the event.
The representative of the Divisional Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ago Iwoye Division, Mrs. Yinka Soneye, congratulated all members of TAPCA for being alive to witness the day.
She enjoined members of the association to always make use of the disability duty desk at their office to settle matters instead of taking laws into their hands. “We will always make sure your rights and privileges are protected and upheld at all times” she concluded.
Highlight of the event was the distribution of a desk top computer to a member, two generating sets to two members who are into the business of phone charging, two gas burner and gas cylinders to two members who are food vendors and a grinding machine was given to a member to aid their economic standing. Food items worth of N5000 each was distributed to about sixty of the association members.
