NLC begins strike Wednesday next week over cash, fuel scarcity

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has directed its members nationwide to begin sit-at-home action and to picket all offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN over persistent scarcity of cash.

The directive follows the expiration of seven-day protest and strike notice issued last week to CBN over cash crunch and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, over fuel scarcity.

During a briefing at the end of its Central Working Committee meeting in Abuja, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero said the sit-at-home action and picketing which begin from Wednesday next week will be total and indefinite until the twin issues are addressed.

Ajaero said worker’s unions and state chapters are directed to begin mobilisation from this Friday to help both the CBN and NNPCL ground the economy, which appears to be their main objective for letting scarcity of cash and petroleum product linger.

The NLC President said workers and their families have remained under perpetual punishment for their inability to access their hard-earned funds from commercial banks. Ajaero said the case is worsened by the unending scarcity of premium motor spirit.

Many say next week’s planned action is a major litmus test for Joe Ajaero since assuming office in February as NLC President at the expiration of the two-term tenure of Ayuba Wabba.
