Crisis in Ogun Assembly over emergence of new Speaker

L-R: Hon Oluomo and Hon Elemide

Ogun State House of Assembly is currently enmeshed in deep crisis of emergence of new Speaker, which has forced the postponement of the inauguration of the 10th Assembly earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June, 2023, to Tuesday, 20th June, 2023.

Great Achiever Magazine reports that the ambition of the immediate past Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo to emerge as Speaker for a second term is facing stiff opposition from Hon. Daisi Elemide, who is also contesting for the Speakership of the Assembly.

The Speakership position of the 26-member Assembly has been zoned by the ruling APC to Ogun Central Senatorial District where both Oluomo and Elemide hail from.

While Hon. Oluomo, an APC member from Ifo Constituency 1 is returning to the Assembly for a fourth term, Hon Elemide, also an APC member from Odeda Constituency is returning to the Assembly for a third term.

As the internal crisis rages, the nine PDP Members-Elect of Ogun State House of Assembly have vowed to work against the emergence of Hon Oluomo as Speaker of the Assembly because of the moral burden he is carrying as a result of his case with the EFCC.

The APC has seventeen Members-Elect.

Meanwhile, Hon. Oluomo enjoys the support of the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, while Hon. Elemide is an ardent follower of the past governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, who is a Chieftain of APC.

It will be recalled that Hon Elemide wanted to contest the Speakership position against Hon Oluomo in 2019 but he stepped down at the last minute.
