Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, 15th August, 2023, paid an unscheduled visit to Journalists in Ogun State at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
The visit, according to Governor Abiodun, was in fulfilment of his promise to the Journalists at an interactive session he had with them on 26th March, 2023, at the Presidential lodge, Abeokuta, where he assured of very close relationship and constant engagement with members of the pen profession.
Great Achiever Magazine reports that Abiodun, while at Iwe-Irohin, called for partnership between his government and Journalists in Ogun State in order to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of Ogun State during his second term in office.
He said: "As critical stakeholders in the polity of Ogun State and the business of governance, in line with section 22 of the 1999 constitution as amended, your role as watchdog and essential partners in progress can never be overemphasized.
"I want to commend your consciousness for professionalism, by being objective and patriotic in your reportage with focus of building a strong socio-economic bridge for our dear state and for the coming generations".
The governor noted that one of the core values and fundamental obligation of the media is critical evaluation of governmental policies through constructive criticism and objective assessment.
He, therefore, implored the leadership of the NUJ and heads of various chapels to always try and encourage their members to be always objective and responsible in their reportage as the real conscience of the society.
Abiodun said, while his government is not averse to constructive criticism, the fundamental principle of journalism as illumination of the society will be defeated if criticism is based on malice, parochial tendency and self aggrandizement.
He thanked the Journalists for many of their reports in the past years, which had objectively and constructively assessed his government's policies and subsequently served as impetus to improve on the quality of democratic deliveries and serve the people better.
Governor Abiodun disclosed that his administration is working on the allocation of land for the council to build it's permanent site, while assuring that the union will continue to receive support in all ways possible to ensure that Journalists deliver their statutory obligations in a media friendly environment without any intimidation.
Meanwhile, the governor has announced the appointment of Mr. Lekan Adeniran as his Chief Press Secretary (CPS).
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi on Tuesday.
Adeniran is a graduate of Mass Communication with over three decades experience as a journalist.
He started his journalism career at The Guardian in 1992, where he covered the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Lagos State House of Assembly and Governor's Office, Alausa, Ikeja. He left The Guardian in 2001 to join the newly established Daily Independent.
The new CPS also worked with the Compass, Next and National Mirror newspapers.
Before his appointment, Adeniran was the editor of Western Post, an online newspaper publication.
