IGP orders arrest of suspects who killed DPO

Late DPO, Bako Angbashim

Nigeria’s Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has condemned the gruesome murder of a Superintendent of Police, Bako Angbashim, who was, at the time of his death the Divisional Police Officer, DPO of Ahoada Division in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the slain DPO was humiliated, gruesomely murdered, and mutilated by some hardened armed criminals in Ahoada area of Rivers State on Friday, September 8, 2023, while on operation in the area.

The IGP has however ordered immediate investigation, arrest, and prosecution of all the culprits that carried out the heinous and barbaric act; adding that “such an act is not only an affront on our national status but also a reflection of a lack of patriotism and gross illegality”.

The IGP emphasised that such nefarious acts against any operative in Nigeria will not be taken with levity as all the perpetrators will be brought up to face the full wrath of the law.

Egbetokun, in the statement, extended his condolences to the bereaved family, dedicated colleagues and friends of SP Bako Angbashim, while urging them to embody his dedication, humility, and selflessness.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has placed a N100 million bounty on killers of SP Bako and suspended Eze Cassidy Ikegbidi indefinitely for alleged complicity in the death of SP Bako.

Some residents of Rivers State who spoke with AIT.live say, “Before his death, SP Bako was nicknamed “Wonderful DPO” because of his community policing strategies”. They say others call him the man who restored peace in several communities in Ogoni.

He was fondly called Wonderful DPO, Commander of Forces, very loving DPO. “The man who restored peace in several communities for Khana Local Government Area, Tai Local Government Area, Ke bue Eleme nkor, Gokana Local Government Area, Andoni nkor even bue Mtaba”.
