Withheld Salaries: SSANU, NASU shutdown universities next week

On Thursday, police detachment from the Federal Capital Territory Command prevented members of two non-teaching staff unions of Nigerian public universities from a road protest to demand payment of their four months salaries withheld since 2022.

The unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, had converged on the Unity Fountain in Abuja to climax the protests that started last week on the various campuses.

The leadership of the two unions gave the Federal Government until Thursday, July 25 to pay the withheld salaries, or have all universities shut down indefinitely.

The unions are also venting their anger on the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

The unions are also asking for the release of N50 billion Earned Academic Allowances owed to them as well as a review of the 2009 Federal Government and university-based unions agreement.
